Drazen Kosmerl

Drazen Kosmerl, Croatian accordion player and professor, born in 1966 in Koprivnica(Croatia). He started his musical career at the Varazdin Music School, where he graduated from high school of music. He graduated from the State Music Academy "P.I.Tchaikovsky" in Kiev (Ukraine), where he completed his postgraduate studies. His mentors were Vera Visosevic, Slavko Magdic, Ivan Jaskevic and Pavel Fenjuk. He improved his knowledge by working with many eminent musicians and educators. He has won many significant awards at national and international accordion competitions. He is a graduate of the 34th World Accordion Trophy in La Chaux de Fonds (Switzerland) in 1984.

He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Germany, Russia, Ukraine. He has participated in prominent international festivals such as "Two days and two nights of new music" Odessa, "Day of the Ukrainian bayan and accordion" Kiev, "Day of the Russian bayan and accordion" Moscow. He recorded performances with orchestras: the SNG Maribor Opera Orchestra, the Croatian National Theater '''' Orchestra Rijeka, the Varazdin Chamber Orchestra, the 'Camerata Austrians' Orchestra. With the Varazdin Chamber Orchestra in 2010, he premiered the work "Nevera" by composer Deni Dekleva Radaković. In the same year, as the only representative from Croatia, he participated in the Vladimir Runcak Composers Festival in Kiev, one of the most significant contemporary Ukrainian composers.

He especially nurtures chamber music, in ensembles with piano, cello, clarinet and voice. He founded the AccoVoice Duo (vocals and accordion), held concerts at music academies in Trieste, Ljubljana, Kiev, Moscow.

He has received several awards and recognitions for his artistic and educational work:  for exceptional pedagogical work - City of Rijeka, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County; 2010, 2009, 2008, 2005, 2003, 2001, 2000, 1998.  Special Award of the Agency for Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia, for achieved pedagogical results, 2008.  for a special contribution to the development of studies of Classical accordion - Juraj Dobrila University, Department of Music, 2009.  for participation at the 63rd COUPE MONDIALE in Varazdin, 2010.  for contribution to the development of classical accordion studies as part of the 20th anniversary study - Department of Music, Juraj Dobrila University, Pula, 2014. He is a member of the judging committees at national and international competitions: regional and national competitions of the HDGPP, the International Accordion Meetings in Pula, the World Accordion Cup, the Republican Competition of Music Schools of Serbia, the International Music Festival ''Harmonic Days'' Bijeljina (BIH), International Music AKORDEON ART Festival Sarajevo (BiH), etc. In his teaching career at national and international competitions he has won over 70 awards.

He works on the advancement of the pedagogical literature for accordion, and is the author of a series of works by various composers, both for solo accordion and chamber ensembles, and holds seminars for accordion.

He is one of the editors of the monograph "Time to Remember" for two decades of classical accordion studies in Croatia in 2014, and the musical edition "Anthology of works by Croatian accordion composers" in 2019 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the accordion studies in Pula, published by Juraj Dobrila University of Pula. Under his mentorship, there has been successfully defended over 20 final and graduate concerts of classical accordion students. He is working on the improvement of study programs at the Music Academy in Pula, and is one of the authors of the study program of the postgraduate specialist study of classical accordion. He teaches Classical Accordion and Chamber Music at the Academy of Music in Pula with the title of Associate Professor. He was a member of the University Quality Committee, head of the Classical Accordion Department. Currently, he is the Dean of the Music Academy in Pula.
